As always, there’s more to the story
It is getting a little tiring watching all the mainstream media drinking each other’s bathwater on the story of the poor teen 19 yr. old “student,” Awish Aslam, turfed from a Tory election rally in Guelph. A google search of her name reveals more than 30 pages of stories written about her and the incident in the past five days. Dish up the pablum and a pliant media lap it up.
But clicking a couple of more pages reveal this link. It might look like a bunch of gobbledy-gook but it is actually HTML script of an email written on Dec. 2, 2008.
When you look at the script in an HTML viewer, you can see the entire email. Here it is. I enlisted the support of Pierre Bourque of Bourque.com fame to help me identify the people the email was sent to and as I thought, they are mostly all NDP MPs, party staff or other insiders. You will notice the supposed “victim” of Harper’s “goons” as some media and Michael Ignatieff have taken to calling the RCMP who were doing security for the Prime Minister, is one of the recipients.
The email refers the reader to Bourque’s website and a poll he was running. Well, on that date, Bourque tells me he ran two polls. This one and this one.
You will notice the polls were all about what was going on in Ottawa on that day which, of course all about the coalition the opposition were trying to form to usurp the government.
So, it would certainly appear that the poor 19 yr. old second year poli-sci student is really an NDP insider. This whole thing smells like a set up and the mainstream media have been played like a fiddle by the NDP.
But, of course, there could be something I’m missing.

We have been to Harpers rallies two years ago & we were checked also, no big deal!!! Sure hope Conservatives get MAJORITY & RETURN TO SOME SENSE POLITICAL SANITY in this COUNTRY.

Here is an interesting fact to mull over….
When my kids were in grades 10, 11 and 12 in 2008 All the Social Studies classes were following the election and the students were encouraged to seek information from all the parties…Do you think it’s possible that Miss Aslam may have been a high school student that was encouraged to put her email on lists for information from each party?
My daughter tells me that some groups of students were assigned a specific party to follow throughout the election. Many of them put their names on the emails lists of parties in order to garner information directly from the source.
Seriously, people are really reading WAAYYY to much into her name possibly being on an email list!
I think some people are just getting way too paranoid!

I don’t think it should matter if she were a card carrying member of the NDP or any other party. Really, isn’t a rally a place to go to learn more? To listen, to decide? Are you truly only permitted entry into the conservative church if you are already a convert? So what if she HAD an affiliation with another party. Perhaps you could look at the option that, especially at her age, she is still looking.

DOCUMENT-ALTERING SCANDAL: Hardly a scandal. It was up to Ms. Oda to approve or deny, and she chose to deny. Obviously she was under pressure to approve it, and we don’t know why, but she apparently didn’t want someone in power to know it was her. And, I agree with her denying funds to those groups.
INTEGRITY SCANDAL: We really won’t know all the circumstances around this; its just blown out of proportion. I remember in elementary school, one kid would get bullied and defend himself, and the bullies friends would all say it was the other kid’s fault… 228 “complaints”? Waaaah.

ACCESS TO INFORMATION: Some information is sensitive, how can you argue about that? You believe we should be publishing on the internet all the mission data going on in the world so that our enemies know what we’re doing?
CENSUS SCANDAL: Mandatory long-form census isn’t accurate. Garbage in, garbage out. People put whatever because they don’t care or because they feel its none of the governments business. Race? Other. Religion? Other. Sex? Lots. Go away.
EJECTION OF CONSERVATIVE RALLY ATTENDEES: Obviously NDP insiders; that email list showed assistants, MP’s, government employees, … and a few students? “Poll to distribute,” obviously is meant to get these people to activate their little armies to flood the polls, much like we see on news websites and when comments are written to have an overwhelming “Like” (or dislike) of whatever comment was made, in the vain hope that it may sway the rest of us into thinking “Hmm, this must be what the majority thinks, so should think that way too.”

Two points only, because that’s all this rubbish is worth.
1. You talk about blaming the entire party for Harper’s misdeeds. THAT IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG. It is ALL directly accountable to Harper. The PMO controls every single message, every blink in the Conservative party right now. This is unprecedented and it is unhealthy. The reason we need to vote the Conservatives out of power is to GET RID OF HARPER, not because all Conservatives are evil. Under another leader they may well come back and be the best government we’ve ever had — unlike the ‘omg, coalition, evil!’ chimps who regurgitate their force-fed Con propaganda, I don’t pretend to know the future — but what we can say with certainty is that under Stephen Harper Canadian democracy has suffered in absolutely unprecedented ways. He is a bad leader and he is bad for our country. To disagree is to be an apologist and a crony, because level-headed (‘true’) Conservatives want nothing to do with him.
2. You dismiss out of hand incredibly serious (charge-worthy, jail-worthy, contempt-worthy) abuses and that says enough about your worldview. A “NDP plant” with what purpose in mind? Even if she were running for a rival party, she should hbe every right to attend a rival rally in a democratic society. Were she to interrupt the meeting somehow, I’d expect that to be a prime opportunity for Stevie to show he has some oratory skill, or at least some balls. Instead, Mr. Shifty’s shifters come to his rescue again. …and party-line towing nappers blame it on the media.

Any one of any political stripe should be able to attend a political rally but usually they identify themselves as NDP, Lib, or whatever. However, this is the PM, (whether you like it or not) and his security is important. The majority(remember that word: democracy: the will of the majority) of people who attend rallies do NOT go to hear hecklers who try to suppress someone’s speech because they don’t agree with it. You should be allowed to have a say at the appropriate time and place but too many people feel their opinions are superior to everyone else’s. You cannot believe that this was not a plant or just someone looking to be clever. This is the kind of dumb stunt university kids pull: I know; I was one of them once.

We have already had people thrown out of Conservative rallies over their NDP bumper stickers, and we know for a fact Ms. Aslam was ejected over a facebook photo showing her with Michael Ignatieff who, you counter-conspiracy Conservatards may remember, IS NOT AFFILIATED WITH THE NDP. Unless there is evidence that she was doing something suspicious at this rally you have added NOTHING to the political discourse, Mr. Knight, except completely vacuous rubbish disguised as your side of the story. Dig up something with substance and stop wasting Canadians’ time.

I guess that could happen to me, too. I keep getting canned emails from Ignatieff. I’ve never voted Liberal in my life, and never will. But there I am, a sitting duck for some “citizen journalist” like Leo Knight, if and when I’m tossed from a Con rally in the future. Liberal plant!

The kindest thing that can be said about your duplicated email cabbage is that it’s inconclusive. However, the point of this note is to discuss the origins of the “goons” characterization. I believe I may have been the person who first used that term in a post on this particular topic, published on my own blog and on rabble.ca on April 6. That post did NOT refer to the Mounties as security goons because I simply could not believe the RCMP would be that unprofessional. When readers emailed me to take issue with my suggestion the goons were merely Conservative party operatives, based on reports they had read online, I argued with them and said in my responses that these must have been hirelings of the Harper Conservatives, not sworn police officers. I guess I stand corrected on that now that the facts are out, and readers can decide for themselves who is a “goon” and who isn’t. If anything, the initial coverage that misled me suggests the media you label as “pliant” are in fact doing whatever they can to get the Harper Conservatives elected as a majority, including disguising the true identity of the people giving the bum’s rush to citizens who wish to attend Mr. Harper’s supporters-only rallies. Mr. Harper’s exclusion of non-supporters from his rallies is obviously undemocratic, but hardly unexpected. His use of taxpayer-paid police officers to achieve that goal is a serious abuse of power.

Author Leo Knight gives us a hilarious conspiracy theory here but it’s missing a pretty crucial point: WHY WAS SHE EJECTED??? Bob Rae could have been at that rally, there would be no grounds to eject him unless he was stirring something up. Nobody with any relation to this story has suggested Ms. Aslam was doing ANYTHING the least bit suspicious or inappropriate or otherwise objectionable, so WHY was she thrown out of the rally? You have not clarified anything or added anything of substance to the discussion over this issue, just picked an email address off the internet and used it to completely make up a bunch of groundless nonsense. The fact that this is now on Bourque’s homepage is an insult to every Canadian with a positive IQ.

Well, a quick look at the email address, awish_91@hotmail.com, leads me to believe that this is the correct Awish Aslam. Please not the “91” in the address which when printed as “1991” and subtracted from “2011” equals 20. Hmmm, 20? That’s pretty close to 19 and if this innocent babe was born later in the year she could still be a mere 19 years old if “91” was the year of Awish Aslam’s birth, Yeah, she may have been young in 2008, still, that is roughly the level of maturity one expects from people that supports NDP policies.

CFRA had a news item where The RCMP admitted that they were responsible for some of the ejections as Prime Minister Harper is indeed still the PM until the vote says otherwise. The job of the RCMP is to protect the Prime Minister while in office.

And I value that kind of thing because I am a party man myself. I recently attended the Jack Layton rally at the Sheraton hotel in Surrey. I am sure security was present somewhere, but I never noticed anything, and was never asked for ID. People circulated freely in the corridors, spectators and participants alike. It was a very relaxed and low key atmostphere, in marked contrast to the kind of super-disciplined staging we are hearing about in the case of the Conservative meet-ups.

He could not say, however, what is under investigation, but said the contract was not tied to another scandal that has kept Quebec forensic accountants busy over the past years. “It’s not related to sponsorship or Gomery, that I can tell you,” said spokesman Pierre Teotonio (Ottawa Citizen, October 4, 2005). Ok, so…The Lieberal scandals from “Ten Years Ago” are..Irrelevant. But. Mr. Carsons scandals, and make no mistake aside from the bankruptcy.. which unfortunately many people have to deal with in their lives, they are scandalous, but some also took place several years ago. Those are completely relevant…really? I would say yes they are, but then following the logic above…maybe they shouldn’t be. Carson’s fraud convictions aren’t really the story here (though sadly they are starting to take over). Carson is an issue because his hiring reflects poorly on Harper. I’m all for giving second chances, but this is a guy with FIVE FRAUD CONVICTIONS who was Harper’s longtime personal aide and quote “THE POINT MAN ON CANADA’S INVOLVEMENT IN AFGHANISTAN!” That’s pretty brutal, that someone who’s been found guilty of lying and cheating FIVE TIMES by our courts was privy to the most sensitive material in our entire country.
Let’s also keep in mind Carson was ‘vetted’ prior to his employment and Harper now says he has no idea about the man’s past. So was the screening TO BECOME PERSONAL ASSISTANT TO OUR PRIME MINISTER woefully inept, or does Harper have woefully bad judgment?? OR BOTH?
And THEN, of course, there is the matter of how all this came to light: Carson was accused of illegal influence-peddling AFTER leaving Harper’s employ. Which raises (admittedly mild) further questions about the PM’s judgment and his associations in general.

with all due respect, the security for the PM (whatever party he/she is from) is much more stringent than the security for either the OLO or other party leaders.
You see, Harper is still PM. Whether you like it or not, he *is* the leader of Canada. If an attempt was made on his life, it would have profound implications on the country.
We do not know, nor will we ever know, if Harper has received threats or what these possible threats may be.

Last I checked you’re not allowed to murder the Prime Minister, the leader of the opposition, any sitting MP, any suspended MP, any member of the Canadian public, or even any non-citizen on Canadian soil!
You may have some semblance of a point that the PM’s security is a little beefier than others’ because he is a more prolific figure but that’s really not relevant to anything being discussed. All of the party leaders are campaigning with RCMP protection. All of them are holding rallies that are [supposed to be] free and open to all Canadians. The actions undertaken by staff at Harper’s events — namely to physically eject people out of crazy paranoia for no valid reason — are unacceptable and inappropriate.

Could some of you Harper apologists explain why he is spending billions on jails as part of a ‘get tough on crime’ initiative when Canadian crime levels are steadily dropping?
Can you explain why this spending was justified with the excuse that ‘unreported crime is on the rise’? (Can you admit even a child would call bullshit on such a hollow lie? Probably not.)
Can you understand that stuffing people into jails has been PROVEN to INCREASE risk of reoffending? Can you acknowledge that there are better ways of handling non-violent criminals?

The Ad Scam is “irrelevant” only because and to the extent that it does not concern MPs who may potentially become our leaders (again). If Harper was not running in this election but had decided to retire, and some sort of “Compassionate Conservative” replaced him, I wouldn’t really care who wins.
This is not — to me or most of the Liberals — about “putting Ignatieff in power” it is purely about getting rid of Harper. I cannot fathom why it is so difficult for Conservatives to understand or admit that he is not healthy for Canada. He has created divisions where none existed before; he wades into rural populations and rants about “Liberal Toronto elites” (his house majority John Baird is a gay Toronto aristocrat, but that apparently doesn’t matter????); he says Liberals are power-hungry when he has displayed more naked lust for power and centralization of decision-making in the Prime Minister’s Office than Canada has ever seen.
If you understand the value of a billion dollars put toward healthcare or education, how on earth can you support the “planes & prisons” platform of the Conservatives???
Harper’s corruption will be “irrelevant” when he is no longer the leader of the party, because it will not be an accurate reflection of the Conservative Party once he is gone. It was called a global economic crisis, which by all counts Canada weathered relatively well. Does all the credit go to the government? Absolutely not, I think the quality of our banking system was the biggest factor.
As for the planes, fact is the military and our men and women serving do need new equipment, are the F-35’s the BATEA (Best Available Technology Economically Achievable)? I don’t know that either, there seems to be views on both sides of that and I think it needs to be re-examined in that light. And my hope is that this is what will happen. But the bottom line is the servicemen and women in the forces need to have the best we can afford. Key words..best and afford.

And if Harper is willing to slash government services and shut down independent, non-partisan watchdogs to “afford” these planes, where do we draw the line? I have a hard time believing that everyone who’s planning to vote Conservative is okay with the idea of Canada as a “night watchman state.” It would be one thing if Harper was saving us money, but even if you ignore all the stimulus-related bills he spends a lot of money instead of saving it.
If he was a genuine fiscal conservative we wouldn’t be buying these planes. What emergency do we need them for? They can’t perform search & rescue; they don’t fit Canada’s needs, but the Conservatives are plunging ahead with them. Why can’t we wait a couple of years and buy something from a different manufacturer or of a different manufacturing generation?
And why does he insist on building jails? He has some kind of obsession with incarceration, and that’s not what I want in a Canadian Prime Minister. How about you?

Bruce Carson began his relationship with Barbara Lynn Khan in 2006, around the time he began advising Stephen Harper in his capacity as Prime Minister, according to a source who knows Ms. Khan.
Mr. Carson was a senior adviser to Mr. Harper, working on sensitive issues ranging from Afghanistan to the federal budget to climate change.
But in recent weeks questions have multiplied about how a man with five criminal convictions, who once went bankrupt and suffered years of debt problems, could have been welcomed into the centre of government power.
Now, after Mr. Harper called in the RCMP to investigate allegations of improper lobbying by Mr. Carson, The Globe has learned that he was in a relationship with a former U.S. felon while serving in the Prime Minister’s Office.
It was Mr. Carson’s relationship with another sex worker that first landed him under the glare of the RCMP. Again, the double standard. Is Carson shady? Sure looks like it, however, like it or not, the same kinds of associations (and this does not make it right, and is not an excuse for Harper/Carson) can be made in the case of past Liberal transgressions. This is an inconvenient truth… no matter who gets in, there will be scandals. Does that make it ok, no, because that drags everyone down to a lower common denominator.
For any who are old enough, I am what you would call a Bill Davis Conservative, a Pink Tory, generally “progressive” in my view. Socially a bit to the left, fiscally a bit to the right. Unfortunately, for most of us we are now in a political dead zone. The Reformers (Mr. Harper being one of them) have for the most part excised/hijacked the progressive out of Conservative. However, Iggy has now shifted so far left to try to cut off Taliban Jack that in reality there is no one in the middle anymore.
Where are the McKenna, Manley, Martin (and even JC to an extent) Liberals now? They are probably sitting with me and my ilk, the old progressive cons…wishing for a “Mulligan” (to cop a golf phrase) and taking a do-over with 5 new leaders, and a more moderate approach on all sides. No one really represents us well enough to deserve our vote.

I think on the planes we are generally in agreement, I think it needs some second thought. I know Mr. Page and I think he deserves more credit for his work.

I want a Canadian Prime Minister who is going to stand up for victims and their rights, I want a Prime Minister and country that does not ascribe to honour killings/genital mutilation being too harshly described when the term “barbaric” is used and that does not see things like “there are sexual assaults and then there are sexual assaults”. Believe it or not, “society” cannot be blamed for failing criminals and there comes a point where personal responsibility for ones actions has to be taken. And the punishment has to be more than a slap on the wrist and a tut-tut.
So, building more jails, if needed. Reforming the criminal justice system, definitely.
But then I am (as described by some on this thread)apparently a “loony, laughable idiot, asshole, who lacks self-respect”..so I guess my opinion is irrelevant.

Adding minimum mandatory sentences is not “reforming the criminal justice system” it’s precisely the opposite.
You bring up a Liberal’s offhand remarks about degrees of sexual assaults. Do you believe that groping someone is equivalent to raping them? Probably not. And yet you have no problem condemning someone else whose actual words you’ve probably never heard or read for saying the same thing. Now regardless of how you feel about that issue specifically, you’ve somehow twisted that into meaning the liberals are soft on crime. Guess what, that doesn’t make any sense.
You say you want a safe society. Why, then, do you support the building of more jails and increasingly harsh sentences when it has been demonstrated by people who study these things for a living and actually have INFORMED OPINIONS that the environment of jail actually encourages recidivism, if only through exposure? You have essentially contradicted yourself just to support Stephen Harper. His approach doesn’t make any sense, so how can you support it?

I have said that no one of the 5 represents me enough to deserve my vote, so I am not sure where your conclusion was drawn that I support Harper. I said build jails, “if needed” (key words here)…not build more jails (full stop).
Did I say that minimum mandatory sentencing was what I supported with respect to reform of the criminal justice system? No. The 3 strikes seems to have been an un-mitigated disaster in the US, although that is not a particularly good analogy. What I said was that I wanted a PM that would stand up for victims and their rights.
Right now I think that the system (not any particular party.. but the system itself) is soft on crime in certain areas, I also think that the system does not properly account for victims rights. And I don’t think any of the platforms are particularly valuable in those areas, or at least lack specifics.
So, how many degrees of separation are permissible between the actions/words of persons associated with a leader and said leader, in order to keep the brush from following one to the other? Is it like the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon game…or less? And whatever that degree of separation is that is permissible, has to apply to all leaders equally. And that is usually where the rules start to fall apart and opinion becomes subjective.
Where are the lines drawn between non-elected advisors, elected MP’s and nominated candidates? Or local riding associations or party presidents or hired lobbyists? I don’t know, but as long as the application of the litmus test is consistent then at least I can buy into the concept that there is a degree of fairness in any judgement being passed on any of them.

The leaders are? Harper, Iggy, Layton, and Duceppe. Well I can’t vote for one, not being in Quebec. A farce all on it’s own. One isn’t Canadian, wants to tax me to death for other peoples problems. And the third is more left than the American. That leaves me with Mr. Harper. He isn’t perfect, nobody is. I believe in the core value that the harder you work the further ahead you should be. Not work really hard and spread it around to people who don’t work as hard as me. Selfish? Well I have a family to support, MY FAMILY. I had my kids so I could raise them and decide what they were entitled to. Not stand in line for the hand out from the all knowing, all seeing Government. In my 41 years I have only known scandal and waste from all elected governments. So I go back to what I believe. I am further right than left, that means Harper. To take that further I have met my MP many times and he is definately worth my vote. Mike Lake is a great guy and I believe works in my best interest. Bash away.

A young woman was about to finish her first year of university. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be very Liberal, and among other liberal ideals, was very much in favour of higher taxes to support more government programmes, in other words a “redistribution of wealth”.
She was deeply ashamed that her parents were staunch Conservatives, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her parents had for years harboured an evil, selfish desire to

Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 94% average, and let her know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which
left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn’t even have time for a boyfriend, and didn’t really have many university friends, because she spent all her time studying.
Her mother listened and then asked, ‘How is your friend Audrey doing?’
She replied, ‘Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 60% average. She is popular on campus and university for her is a big blast. She’s always invited to all the parties and lots of times she doesn’t even show up for classes because she’s too hung over.’
Her wise mother asked her daughter, ‘Why don’t you go to the Dean’s office and ask him to deduct 17% off your average and give it to your friend who only has a 60%. That way you will both have a 77% average, and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of marks.’
The daughter, visibly shocked by her mother’s suggestion, angrily fired back, ‘That’s a crazy idea, how would that be fair!? I’ve worked really hard for my grades! And with Harpo making the biggest purchases in Canadian history, you can damn well bet your taxes are going to rise — because of Harper’s spending.

An American military expert says the Tory government’s planned purchase of 65 F-35 fighter jets comes with an unrealistically low price tag for a plane that he says will not meet the country’s needs.
“You’re getting an underperforming airplane for a huge amount of money,” said Winslow T. Wheeler, director of the Straus Military Reform Project of the Centre for Defense Information in Washington D.C.
Winslow, who was in Ottawa Tuesday, at the invitation of the Rideau Institute and Physicians for Global Survival, said the estimated price of $75 million per plane is too low.
“Nobody on this Earth is going to be buying F-35′s in flyable condition at $75 million a copy. That’s not in the cards,” he said.

Sigh, of course the right is wrong. The point of my reply wasn’t who is good or bad personally. It was that Mr. Harper is the leader of the party that fits with my ideals. Mr. Lake is my representative and that means Mr. Harper for me. I’m assumming that the liberals on this chat are all from Ontario. Talk about left wing brain washing. Out west, where all of your equalization payments come from we are little more moderate, thank goodness. Liberal tax platform, tax the oil sands………..not the hydro (east) or nuclear (east). Just the big bad oilsands. Does that affect me? Uh, yup. Does it affect you? Uh, yup. The oil company passes said taxes down the line right to your gas pump. You people remember the National Energy Program? How did that work out? In any event, I am not getting into name calling or the juvenille stuff that a lot of people are on here. Funny thing, though. Seems both the LPoC and the NDP have “forgotten” all about that ‘crisis’, since it didn’t catch fire with Canadians, either.
Well! Cheer up, Liberals! After this election disaster you will at least be able to get rid of Michael Ignatieff. Doesn’t look like your prospects for finding another leader show any stars on the horizon.
What you might want to do, especially if the prospect of another two decades with Harper as Prime Minister of Canada is unappealing to you, is try to define what a “Liberal” really is. You don’t seem to have advanced the theory, at all, since the 19th Century.
Except, of course, the “Promise the Voter Anything” Liberal Party plank, which we all now know you’re never going to fulfil, anyway. You’ll keep it, though, won’t you? Voters don’t remember, do they?
Well, I’m sorry the prospect of a Harper majority government makes you crazier than usual. Please bear in mind that you are not encouraging voters to vote Liberal. All this petty bitterness only turns voters even farther away from the LPoC.
At the rate your ship is sinking, I’m afraid you may have to wait for the 22nd Century before a LPoC leader can be found with any concept of how to run a country. Nice to hear from you! So sorry you hate Harper!
